J-Check J-Scholar testing is a quick and cost-effective way of providing testing and documentation of English proficiency for J-visa scholar applicants. In accordance with United States government visa regulations, all incoming J-visa holders must demonstrate proof of English language fluency. Documentation of English language fluency must be provided to the university before a scholar’s J-visa can be issued. J-Check provides both an objective measurement of English language fluency and the supporting documentation required to ensure regulatory compliance. For J-Scholars, J-Check is an affordable and convenient way of providing language documentation to their host university for the J-visa process.

J-Check evaluates English language proficiency – not just speaking. Grammar, listening, reading, and writing are included. ESL professionals review the speaking and writing sections. This is in accordance with the J-regulation that specifies language proficiency for both the program and day-to-day activities.
- J-Check provides a complimentary diagnostic exam upon registration for scholars to practice with and become familiar with the J-Check process.
- J-Check may be used at a date and time of your choosing.
- J-Check may be used in the privacy of a scholar’s home/office rather than a testing center.
- J-Check secure testing uses iTEP’s Fotosure security software to ensure test-taker identity.
- J-Check provides a comprehensive score report in 24 – 48 hours.

- J-Check test results will be sent directly to the host university to be included as documentation of English fluency in the J-visa scholar applicant’s file.
For institutions that become J-Check schools there is NO direct cost. Simply complete the registration form to let us know that your school will accept J-Check scores. A customizable J-Check page for your institution will be created at no charge and the link will be given to you to include on your University webpage and/or J-Scholar forms.
For J-Scholars, the cost is $99 USD. This fee also includes a Complimentary Diagnostic Practice Test provided upon registration. J-Check may be taken on any day of the week, at any time of the day in the privacy of the scholar’s home or office. All J-Check test IDs are valid one year from point of purchase and the test results are valid for two years from testing.
iTEP Test Length, Test Structure and Content:
Total actual test time per examinee is approximately 85 minutes. There are five sections for different English language skills, which appear in the following order: grammar, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each section contains questions targeting a variety of levels of English proficiency.
J-Check automatically provides a comprehensive grade report in 24–48 hours directly to the host university to be included as documentation of English fluency in the J-visa scholar applicant’s file.
